In the '70s this place was thriving. European-themed shops on the first floor, apartments above them, and the French Market right next door. The French Market is long gone, (though to be fair, the North Market in the Short North area of town does the same thing much better, so nostalgia isn't totally warranted) replaced by a Giant Eagle. The apartments seem to be holding on, but most of the shops and restaurants are gone. I think the cinema's changed hands at least once. When I was little, every so often, Dad and Mom and I would spend a weekend in Columbus, and the French Market and Continent shops were always on the itinerary. Columbus used to be "the big city." It's much bigger now than it was then, and it doesn't feel like a big city to me at all as an adult.

I think I can help you out, let's see: the 70's, cinemas, "athletic club", hmmmm...
I am far from a world traveler, but living here as I do and comparing Columbus to other big cities I that have been to...we are kings of sprawl. Rather than maintaining or refurbishing what was there (and once under the “cool” column) we build new…Easton, Tuttle, Polaris…in place of the old “land” malls…Eastland, Westland, and famously Northland.
As for this place…remember it well. Precursor to Easton style open air centers. The theater is now a very sad (and smelly) dollar theater which has closed and opened many times. Yes…the market is what is missing from the sign. This is about 10 minutes from my front door…but I promise I didn’t go out of my way to choose to live in the middle of the sprawl. Ha, ha.
(BTW…you should write short thought about each entry like this more often. Just a thought.)

Did you ever read "Be True to your School" by Bob Greene? It was his diary of 1964, and I THINK it takes place near Columbus, and he said what you said -- it was "the big city." I think. Even if I'm wrong, I still LOVED that book, and highly recommend it...
