An Open Memo

RE: recent excess of celebrity deaths

I really can’t take too much more of this, and certainly not any more this year. I ask of you the following: please watch your cholesterol, limit your alcohol and prescription drug intake as much as possible, travel sparingly, exercise regularly, wear your seatbelts, visit your doctors regularly, keep antibacterial soap at your sinks, take vitamins, and get flu shots.

I would appreciate it if you kept this up indefinitely, but I’m afraid I will have to insist that you do these things until, at a minimum, the end of calendar year 2010.

Thank you for your attention to these matters.

R.I.P. Patrick Swayze

I really thought if anyone could wrestle pancreatic cancer into the ground, rip out its throat, and kick it in the ear, it was him. You usually get weeks or months to live after a diagnosis, but he fought for a year and a half.

I loved so many things that he was in. Still haven't seen To Wong Foo or Donnie Darko, but still intend to. However, I watched every one of the like, 144 hours of North and South (up until they copped out and gave Orry Main the cheapest, sorriest death scene ever), saw The Outsiders in the theater 14 times (yes, 14), and saw Dirty Dancing - which I was dragged into unwillingly the first time - oh, I don't even know.

And Roadhouse, and Ghost ... and so many other things.

R.I.P. Patrick Swayze.

From Dirty Dancing:

Patrick Swayze - She's Like the Wind

Otis Redding - These Arms Of Mine

Bruce Chanel -Hey Baby

Otis Redding - Love Man

Solomon Burke - Cry to Me

Michael Lloyd - Johnny's Mambo

Representing Roadhouse:

MST3K - A Patrick Swayze Christmas

I'd put up Unchained Melody, but I don't have it, and I'd put up Van Morrison's (in the group "Them") Gloria for the Outsiders, but his people would just make me pull it in an hour. I used to have Stevie Wonder singing "Stay Gold," but I don't seem to anymore.

Schaffner's

Baltimore, Ohio

Summer, and the time for ice cream stands, is over; not just traditionally with the passing of Labor Day, but also weather-wise. It's routinely in the 60s here already, and I have a bad feeling that this is going to be one of those years in which we see snow before Halloween.

So here's a beautiful, if melancholy, song about summer's end.

Johnny Rivers - Summer Rain

Announcement

So this time, my spotty updating is for a better reason than lack of motivation, laziness, what have you. Given the deletions of several Blogger mp3 blogs this week, I am setting up a new home for myself elsewhere. I can't wait! It will have all the bells and whistles, and be very customizable.

It's just going to take a lot of work, so it could be a while. I would ideally like it ready to go before the October Halloween-a-Thon begins on the 1st, but if it isn't, we'll ride October out here and move in November.

Thanks for bearing with me.

Disclaimer:

Music is posted for a short time, and while I use it in part to (hopefully, though not always) go along with the theme of the photo, I also post it in hopes someone will give it a try and fall in love with it as I have. Perhaps they will then seek out more by the artist and buy more cds. That's how it works with me, anyway. If you like it, pick it up at the store; support the artists you love.
