Davy sings lead on both of today's Monkees' selections. Today's hit is I Wanna Be Free; the lesser known is Early Morning Blues and Greens. The latter, also from Headquarters, is a quiet song about the sad morning after a breakup in which inertia and helplessness take hold. It has some lovely, detailed imagery in it, including my favorite line about "cold bare feet on hardwood floor." The lyrics paint an impressively sharp, clear picture and it would be nice to hear more songs this well-written.
