Beach Boys - Surfin' Safari
I sure hope you like the Beach Boys. It ain't summer without them, and it's nothing but summer music of one sort or another through at least the end of this month, so you'll be seeing plenty of them.

Here's the last part of Monkees week. The hit is Heart and Soul from their 1986 reunion album Pool It and the "unhit" is Circle Sky from the soundtrack to their 1969 movie, Head.
"Heart & Soul," though a hit, (and one that really takes me back to my senior year of high school) has not aged gracefully. The tinny '80s production values that I was so used to at the time are horrendous now, and the song (I feel so bad saying this, like I'm throwing my favorite old teddy bear in a bonfire) really is not good on its own. It's cute enough though, and they are, as always, charming.
"Circle Sky" is almost indescribable. It's a Mike song, but rock and roll, not country. It's got some pretty fuzzy production values, at least regarding the vocals, but despite that, it is very good and really stays with you. And I've got to say, for once? Davy's maracas are utterly necessary to the song.

Today's hit is (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone; the nonhit is I Can't Get Her Off My Mind. It's one of Davy's "Tin Pan Alley" songs. It's also an earworm; most of their songs were.
I slacked on posting one day last week, so I'll carry the Monkees over tomorrow as well. Friday's post will of course, be patriotic music, and then I will spend the rest of July posting summery music.

Todays' hit is Last Train to Clarksville and the lesser known song is from their fifth album, The Birds, the Bees, and the Monkees. I'll Be Back Upon My Feet is upbeat, bouncy fun. Sadly, it's the only really worthwhile song on the album. They never even came close to achieving the excellence of Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd. again.

Old School for The Deaf Park
Columbus, Ohio
The building in the background is the old Ohio School for the Deaf (info here) - the surrounding park features a topiary garden with figures fleshing out an Impressionist painting. From the website linked above:
"Georges Seurat's famous post impressionist painting, A Sunday On The Island Of La Grande Jatte, is created in topiary. It is the only topiary interpretation of a painting in existence. This 'landscape of a painting of a landscape' consists of 54 topiary people, eight boats, three dogs, a monkey, a cat and a real pond."
Expose - Seasons Change

I don't remember where or when I took this, but the important thing to remember here is that the weather was better.
Duran Duran - (Reach Up For the) Sunrise
Disclaimer:
Music is posted for a short time, and while I use it in part to (hopefully, though not always) go along with the theme of the photo, I also post it in hopes someone will give it a try and fall in love with it as I have. Perhaps they will then seek out more by the artist and buy more cds. That's how it works with me, anyway.
If you like it, pick it up at the store; support the artists you love.
